Arthur Fils explains abrupt Italian Open retirement

With the exception of ATP World No. 1 Jannik Sinner ‘s win, it was a wild day of unexpected happenings at the 2026 Italian Open , and part of the unpredictability centered around Arthur Fils . Fils played just 22 minutes, losing four games of his match before retiring. Fans were confused and concerned. After the match, Fils explained what was going on. The injury bug is prevalent throughout professional tennis , but it has hit the British team particularly hard at this year’s Mutua Madrid Open . The Brits only have two players, one woman and one man, in the 128-person singles draws. Thankfully, Katie Boulter and Cam Norrie are healthy because no one else is. Despite an earlier than expected exit at the Miami Open, Alcaraz is the reigning Australian Open champion and with that win, completed the Career Grand Slam. At 22, he was the youngest to win each of the Grand Slams: Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, at least once. Between his tournament earnings and endorsements, Alcaraz has plenty of money in his bank account. He doesn’t have a lot of time to spend the money as he is on the ATP Tour for nearly 11 months each year. Alcaraz has planned his first big purchase.
