Jannik Sinner responds to Alexander Zverev’s post‑Madrid remarks

Image
Photo by Julian Finney/Getty Images Jannik Sinner delivered a dominant performance in the Madrid Open final, making short work of Alexander Zverev. Sinner cruised past Zverev 6-1, 6-2 to lift his first Madrid title and set a new record as the first player to win five straight Masters titles. He’s now just one Italian Open win away from completing the Career Golden Masters – something he could achieve this month, right in front of his home fans. After their match, Zverev spoke about how far ahead of the pack Sinner is right now. “I think so,” Zverev said when asked if Sinner was on another level from the rest of the ATP Tour. Zverev’s comments weren’t lost on Sinner, who addressed them during his post-match press conference. Top tennis players renew feud with grand slam tournaments over prize money

Image
The world’s top tennis players have expressed their “deep and collective disappointment” at the prize money on offer at this year’s Roland Garros . While French Open organisers have announced an increase of 9.5 per cent in total prize money for this year’s tournament, rising to an overall pot of €61.7m (£53.7m), several leading players from the men’s and women’s top 10 continue to be frustrated. The group of star players, including Carlos Alcaraz , Jannik Sinner , Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff , have long argued that they should receive a greater percentage of the revenues generated by the four grand slam tournaments and were similarly disappointment by the prize money at this year’s Australian Open . According to the group, their share of the overall revenue generated by Roland Garros is projected to decline to 14.3 per cent this year. In recent years, the players have pushed for that figure to be closer to the 22 per cent received at mixed events on the ATP and WTA Tours with eq...

Image
Coco Gauff overcame a dramatic on-court illness , vomiting during her Madrid Open match, to secure a remarkable victory, as a stomach virus appears to be circulating among players. The American third seed, who was a set and a break down against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea , had to rush off court to be sick during the second set. From upstart to unstoppable — Boris Becker praises Jannik Sinner’s surge

Image
Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images Jannik Sinner has been on a terrific run of form on the ATP Tour over the past few months. The Italian didn’t get off to the best start to his 2026 season, beginning with a failed title defence at the Australian Open. Sinner was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the semifinals at Melbourne Park, with the Serb stopping him from winning three straight titles. He then lost in the quarterfinals at the Qatar Open, but since then, no one has been able to stop him. He’s won Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo all in a row. Sinner‘s return to form was expected by many, but tennis legend Boris Becker still finds his level ‘incredible’. Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images Boris Becker reveals Jannik Sinner was ‘really upset’ after Melbourne Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Becker said: “I think Jannik was really upset about losing to Djokovic in the fifth set in Melbourne; he wasn’t expecting it. “The loss to Mensik in Doha was definitely easier to digest....

Alexander Zverev joins the ‘smart’ movement, aiming to mirror Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Image
Photo by IZHAR KHAN / AFP via Getty Images Alexander Zverev has opened his clay season with back-to-back semi-final appearances, but there’s a sense that he still hasn’t hit top form. He hasn’t reached a final in 2026 yet and doesn’t look like a serious threat for titles at the moment. Zverev has all the physical tools and technical skills needed to compete for major honours, yet he remains largely uncompetitive when it comes to challenging Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Zverev isn’t the only player trying to close the gap on Alcaraz and Sinner. Daniil Medvedev has recently teamed up with Lorenzo Musetti in an attempt to better prepare for them. Even Rafael Nadal admitted before his exit from Madrid that it would take more than just one tournament win to catch up with their level of play. Alexander Zverev equals record that Andrey Rublev held for less than 30 minutes

Image
Photo by WILLIAM WEST / AFP via Getty Images Andrey Rublev kept up his push for a first title of 2026, easing past Lorenzo Sonego at the Barcelona Open. After a straight-sets win over Mariano Navone in the opening round, Rublev followed up with another strong performance, defeating Sonego 6-2, 6-3. The Russian is still searching for his first tour-level title of the season, having fallen just short in Hong Kong, Doha and Dubai. But with Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing from the tournament, Rublev has a clearer path to chase silverware at this ATP 500 event. On his way to silverware in Spain’s capital, he set a unique tennis record – though it lasted less than half an hour. “Rublev has become the only player in history to serve four double faults and hit four aces consecutively,” wrote @perfect.tennisuk. “So him.” The record was even covered by Eurosport, who compiled highlights from what they called “the most unpredictable game you’re likely to see on clay all year.” Photo by WILLIAM WEST / ...

What the Barcelona Open could reveal about Jack Draper’s form on clay

Photo by Paul Harding/Getty Images for LTA Jack Draper is set to return to competitive play at the Barcelona Open. Draper, who ranks second among British players, hasn’t played since the Miami Open, where he was beaten 6-7, 6-7 by Reilly Opelka in his opening match. This will be his first tournament on clay this year, and he’ll start against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the first round. Jannik Sinner working to improve a shot Novak Djokovic has already mastered, according to his coach

Image
Photo by Mateo Villalba/Getty Images Jannik Sinner is always looking for ways to take his game up a notch. The Italian is enjoying an outstanding run of form, having strung together 14 straight wins. That streak has helped him cut into Carlos Alcaraz’s lead at the top of the rankings, with Sinner eyeing a return to world number one during the clay-court swing. Sinner has always been seen as an attacking player, and his ability to move forward has taken him even further in recent years. It has brought him Grand Slam success and a handful of Masters titles. But he still feels there’s more to add, and Vagnozzi wants him to work on one specific skill that Djokovic excels at – hitting backhands down the line. Sinner does have a solid two-handed backhand already, but it’s not quite on Djokovic’s level. This might be why he often chooses cross-court shots over going down the line. With Novak set to skip this year’s Madrid Open due to scheduling changes and Sinner in such strong form, there co...

Jessica Pegula shares fitness update after 11-hour run to Charleston Open title defence

Image
Photo by Bradley Kanaris/Getty Images Jessica Pegula returned to the winner’s circle this week, but it took more than 11 hours of tennis for her to secure the Charleston Open title. The American was understandably thrilled after adding another trophy to her collection, and it certainly didn’t come easily. Each of her first four matches went the distance, with three sets required every time. By the end of the final – a 6-3, 7-6 win over Yuliia Starodubtseva – Pegula had spent a total of 11 hours and 22 minutes on court. For comparison, she needed just over seven and a half hours to win Dubai in February. Pegula’s resilience stood out throughout the tournament, especially considering she was coming off two consecutive defeats before arriving in Charleston. After dropping early points in matches against Anna Kalinskaya and Elina Svitolina, she managed to turn both around before edging past Victoria Azarenka and Daria Kasatkina. Jessica Pegula ‘drained’ after 11 hours of tennis at the Char...

Brazilian starlet Joao Fonseca sets up Carlos Alcaraz clash at Miami Open

Image
19-year-old tennis sensation Joao Fonseca set up a highly anticipated second-round clash with Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Open , the first time the pair will meet. Fonseca took just shy of two hours to overcome Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in front of a highly partisan Brazilian crowd at Miami Gardens. The teenager played Alcaraz’s only real rival, Jannik Sinner , in Indian Wells last month, and now faces the other pre-eminent player on the men’s tour. Fonseca pushed Sinner in two tight tie-breaks in their fourth-round encounter, the first time the two played each other, with Sinner inching ahead in the key moments and ultimately going on to win the title, his first of 2026. “Excited for sure,” Fonseca said when asked about his next match. “I don’t know about other players, but I look forward to playing against the top players. Coco Gauff 'fit enough' and ready to compete in Miami Open

Image
Claiming she never wants to take another MRI again, Coco Gauff said she’s fit enough to play the Miami Open, which started Tuesday March 17 th  with first-round action. The Delray Beach resident withdrew from the first leg of the Sunshine Double at Indian Wells in the fourth round against upstart Alexandra Eala with a left forearm injury that she labeled as a nerve injury. An ensuing MRI was inconclusive,  allowing the 22-year-old superstar to play her hometown tournament. Gauff admitted she would have passed on it if it wasn’t South Florida’s premier tennis event. “I think it was a nerve thing, like I said immediately after the match,’’ Gauff told reporters at the Miami Open’s Media Day on March 17 th . “The MRI was nothing shown. It was the first time I had to take an MRI. It felt like that’s what a coffin would look like. It was very weird. I hope I don’t have to go in one of those again.’’ Seeded fourth, Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, is not conside...

Will Aryna Sabalenka defend her Miami Open crown and win the Sunshine Double

Image
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka looked every bit the part on Sunday as she overcame the loss of the first set and came back to defeat Elena Rybakina to win her first Indian Wells title. Sabalenka has lost to Rybakina in their two most recent meetings, also in finals. The first was last November at the WTA Finals, and the second was in January at the Australian Open. Before the match, Sabalenka vowed not to let an opportunity to win a big tennis title elude her again without doing everything possible. She withstood tremendous heat and precision play by Rybakina in the first set. In key moments, in the latter stages of the final two sets, she appeared the fresher of the two, defending a match point for Rybakina in the third set tiebreaker. Pat McAfee weighs in on controversial Daniil Medvedev and Jack Draper IW hindrance call

Image
ESPN’s Pat McAfee never discusses tennis on his daily show so fans knew it had to be something controversial to get his attention as to the happenings at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells . McAfee joined a chorus of other people online and elsewhere talking about the chair umpire’s ruling on the hindrance argument made by Daniil Medvedev against Jack Draper during their quarterfinal match. MORE: Genie Bouchard reviews the Indian Wells ‘Drop Shot’ signature cocktail What Pat McAfee said In classic McAfee fashion, there was some profanity in his tweet. Admitting he does not know much about tennis, he still labeled the call “bu$$s&*t.” His argument, similar to Jack Draper’s, was that Draper’s arm motion was not significant enough to constitute a distraction and therefore a hindrance to Daniil Medvedev. Two-time champ Swiatek still in cruise control at BNP Paribas Open

Image
It set up as an intriguing round of 16 matchup at the BNP Paribas Open, the No. 2 seed against the winner of the most recent WTA 1000 tournament. What it turned into was another dominant performance by Iga Swiatek. Swiatek backs up her No. 2 seed by racing away from Karolina Muchova on Stadium 1 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. After a pedestrian opening, Swiatek won the last nine games of the match for an impressive if perhaps surprising 6-2, 6-0 win over Muchova, the No. 13 player in the WTA rankings and the winner of the Doha event in February. "I think it was a great match," Swiatek said. "I felt rally solid and like I could really, from the beginning till the end, play my kind of game and just play how I wanted to." About the only threat to Swiatek's dominance in the match came in the final game, when Swiatek slipped along the baseline running for a shot and appeared to tweak her right ankle. Swiatek gave a thumbs up to the chair umpire and then closed o...
