Ada girls complete Class 4A tennis 3-peat

OKLAHOMA CITY — The celebration started early Saturday for the Ada High School girls tennis team. The Lady Cougars clinched the Class 4A State championship by advancing to championship matches in three divisions Saturday morning at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. By midday, it was all over but the crying — by the other state contenders. Ada finished with 29 team points to capture its third consecutive Class 4A state title. Riverfield Country Day School took runner-up with 25 points, followed by Crossings Christian with 19, Lincoln Christian with 16 and The Academy of Classical Christian Studies with 10. Notably, the teams that finished second through fifth were all private schools. Ada coach Terry Swopes said his players saved some of their best tennis of the season for the final weekend. “I was incredibly proud of the girls this weekend. They all handled the pressure and saved their best for last,” Swopes told The Ada News. “Winning a state championship is rare and incredibly hard to...

Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School traveled to Clever High School for a regular season boys tennis contest Tuesday. The Cavaliers rolled to a 9-0 sweep of the Bluejays. MSSU cuts ribbon on renovated tennis courts

Missouri Southern State University announced Tuesday that it has completed renovation of its six outdoor tennis courts. The project was made possible in part by a $55,000 grant from the U.S. Tennis Association Tennis Venue Services. USTA Missouri Valley contributed an additional $3,500 toward the upgrades. The project also received a $30,000 appropriation from the MSSU student senate, along with funding from an Immersive Learning Grant awarded to the kinesiology department. The renovated site now features six fully lighted outdoor courts, three of which are lined for both adult and youth play. Improvements include new fencing and an ADA-accessible sidewalk and gate, enhancing accessibility and usability for all visitors. Andrea Cullers, MSSU professor and chair of the kinesiology department, called the project a labor of love over the past few years. She said that beyond being used for recreation, the courts will be used by physical education and sports and recreation management majors...

Standards and surprises at the Alaska State Tennis Tournament

Oct. 12—There were plenty of familiar winners Saturday at the Alaska State Tennis Tournament. West High continued its dominant run of state titles by taking the team competition. The Eagles' top girls player, Lana Cebrian, notched her second state singles title. Likewise, the Chugiak girls doubles team of Mary Jo Landon and Timber Fleischhacker repeated as champions. But several newcomers joined the winners circle as well. Juneau-Douglas senior Elliot Welch used a straight set victory to become the first boys singles champion in the history of the school. And the mixed doubles team of Evan Dimmick and Emery Bryan earned the first state tennis title of any type for the Wolves. Welch had to win a battle with West's Boden Mason in the quarterfinals before topping Dimond's Todd Debenham in straight sets for two straight matches to take the title. "Everyone that made it to state made it for a reason, so everyone's really good," Welch said. While Juneau-Douglas has ...

Derryfield School's Correnti is state singles tennis champ

Finally. That was Sophia Correnti’s first thought after her last high school singles tennis match. After coming close in each of the previous three years, the Derryfield School senior won her first NHIAA singles title recently at Southern New Hampshire University. Correnti defeated Souhegan’s Callie Perrin 6-3, 6-4 in the final. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe I just did that. Wow,’” Correnti said. “It was a really good feeling.” The Bedford resident was the runner-up in the singles tournament each of the past two seasons and reached the semifinals as a freshman. Her first singles championship came five days after she helped Derryfield win its second straight Division I team title at the same venue. Correnti, who is headed to Tulane University in New Orleans in the fall and will try out for its Division I women’s tennis team, finished her senior season 21-0 in singles play. Over her Derryfield career, Correnti went 57-2 in singles competition. “(I was) just coming in with the ...

Falmouth's Sofia Kirtchev, Matt Morneault win singles tennis state titles

May 17—WATERVILLE — The final return went into the net, and Falmouth's Sofia Kirtchev walked to the net in victory with a slow pace, and a hand pressed against her stomach. Exhaustion, and relief. Kirtchev, the No. 1 seed, fought through a lingering illness to win the girls state singles tennis championship Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 2 Molly Tefft of Brunswick, 6-2, 6-3 at the indoor courts at Colby College. "I can't express how grateful I am to be here, as well as how proud I am of myself," Kirtchev said. "It's really my family and my friends that pushed me through this whole thing." Moments later, sophomore and boys top seed Matt Morneault made it a Falmouth sweep, defeating second seed and friend Will Meyer of Camden Hills, 6-3, 6-4. "It's a great feeling," Morneault said. "I've played with Will since we were little kids. ... I just know his game. We've played so many times that I know what to do, and I know how to pl...
