DC native Hailey Baptiste making herself at home at DC Open

WASHINGTON — Now in her eighth year as a professional tennis player, Hailey Baptiste doesn’t get rattled very easily. But when the 23-year-old Washington native was asked to attend Saturday’s unveiling of the men’s and women’s draws for the Mubadala Citi DC Open at Rock Creek Creek Park Tennis Center, she had some reservations. “I hate looking at the draw,” she acknowledged more than 30 minutes before the ceremony kicked off at 3 p.m. “I usually never do [look]. [But] they want me there, and it’s my home tournament. So I’ll do it today.” As much as Baptiste might have hated the exercise, she was the star of the draw. More than 100 fans — standing and seated — crowded a makeshift stage to get a glimpse at the upcoming matches. And when Baptiste was introduced to the crowd, she earned the biggest round of applause and cheers among the handful of speakers who took the microphone. A few minutes later, Baptiste learned that she will open her stay at the tournament against No. 6 seed Sofia K...

Takeaways from boys tennis regional championships

Jun. 9—LEWISTON — The only thing different for the Yarmouth boys tennis team was the seeding. The second-seeded Clippers won their sixth straight Class B South championship Monday, shutting out No. 1 Lincoln Academy 5-0 at Bates College. In Class A South, Falmouth returned to the final for the second straight year and fifth in seven seasons with a 4-1 win over Thornton Academy. The Class C South boys final between Waynflete and Maine Central Institute was in progress at press time. From Spain to a final While the Clippers were in the B South final last year, their No. 1 player was not. Andre Violette played second singles as a sophomore, but spent his junior season abroad in Spain at the Emilio Sanchez American School, a school and tennis academy in Barcelona. Violette, a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Eli Melanson on Monday, said he was happy to contribute to a tit...

Boys tennis: New Willmar Cardinals coach back for a rebuild

Apr. 11—WILLMAR — After 13 years away, Brandt Lager is back patrolling the courts for the Willmar boys tennis team. An assistant coach for the Cardinals from 2009-12 under coaches Loren Holter and Jim Anderson, Lager jumped into the head coach role this spring. He replaces Forrest Rice. "I actually coached Forrest," Lager said. "He was on the team the last year I coached." Lager added: "I just got the opportunity. When I coached before, my joke was that I'd have four kids in between and get back into tennis." Well, Lager has his four kids now. "I'm back at it," he said. Now, he's hoping to rebuild a Cardinals tennis squad that went 1-9 in the Central Lakes Conference last season and lost in the opening round of the Section 8AA-South tournament. Lager has tried to get players back that previously played tennis. He also recruited athletes looking for a spring sport while acting as a site supervisor during boys basketball games at the hi...

Tigers girls tennis rallies against Bulldogs

Apr. 8—EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers girls tennis team went on the road and pulled off a tight 3-2 win over the Ellensburg Bulldogs on Thursday. It was a hard-fought win. The Tigers would drop both singles matches, putting them in a 0-2 deficit. From there, it would be left to the doubles matchups. However, head coach Emily Allsopp was confident. "I told my girls that we need to just play the tennis that we know we can play and focus on the basics," she said. The Tigers stayed true to that goal in their doubles matches, winning all three to secure a comeback victory. The first doubles match was won in two sets by Erika Morford and Ali Helaas. It was much closer in doubles two and three, and it took the Tigers three sets to pull off the comeback. Jessica Mathis and Lilly Brewer had to stick it out the longest against the Bulldogs. They won the first set 6-4, dropped the second 3-6, then retook momentum, winning the third set after being down 0-4 and fighting back to 6-4. Allsop...
