Newton girls tennis falls to LHC rival DCG

Sep. 9—GRIMES — Dallas Center-Grimes defeated the Newton girls tennis team 9-2 on Monday. But the Little Hawkeye Conference matchup was closer than the score indicates.

Makenzie Clark won her match at No. 5 singles and then teamed up with Camryn Andrew to win at No. 3 doubles, but the Cardinals lost a third-set tiebreaker and a pair of doubles matches were decided by a total of four games.

DCG won its third straight overall, and the Mustangs (4-7, 2-4 in the conference) downed Newton for the first time in the series since 2023.

The Cardinals (1-7, 1-5) did not have the services of No. 1 player Morgan Frehse in the loss.

Clark claimed a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, but that was Newton's only singles win.

Ava Williams fell 6-3, 0-6, 13-11 at No. 4 singles, but Clark and Andrew scored a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-0, 11-9 victory at No. 3 doubles.
