Serena Williams’ former coach recalls his first impressions of Ben Shelton, ‘that was insane’
Ben Shelton is among the American stars searching for Australian Open success in Melbourne, and he has started off well.
Shelton is the eighth seed at the Australian Open, where he was handed a very tricky draw in his attempts at a maiden Grand Slam title.
But the ATP Tour number seven superbly overcame the first hurdle, defeating Ugo Humbert in the first round.
The American battled past the Frenchman 6-3, 7-6(7-2), 7-6(7-5) in the first round to set up a second round meeting with Dane Sweeny.
Patrick Mouratoglou blown away by Ben Shelton’s physique
Amid Shelton’s run at the Australian Open, a former coach of tennis legend Serena Williams has shared insight into the physique of the 23-year-old.
Speaking on his Instagram, Patrick Mouratoglou said: “I know Ben quite well. He’s physically really impressive.
“I remember the other day, I mean the other day was last year, but he was on the bike in the gym. And we always talk, and I come to him and I say hi, and I just hit him on his lower back to say hi.
“And I will always remember the impression I had that was insane. First of all his muscles in his back are huge, huge.
“So I had this impression of two huge muscles, and I felt like I was hitting the table. He is really a mountain.
“You know, doesn’t have the typical physique of a tennis player, who are way lighter in general. I cannot say that it’s an advantage in terms of movement, even though I think he’s doing quite well moving.
“But when it comes to power, it’s not enough, you also need to be loose and have the whip effect, but he has both.”
Ben Shelton faces tricky task against Dane Sweeny
Shelton certainly has physical prowess, although he’s unfortunately already had his major injury issues despite his relatively brief career so far.
In his most recent Grand Slam at the 2025 US Open, he was forced to retire during the third round with a shoulder injury.
But he’s now back with a bang, although faces an intriguing task up next in the form of Australian qualifier Sweeny.
The home favorite will certainly have the backing of the Australian fans, while he’ll be full of confidence after knocking out ATP legend Gael Monfils in his farewell season.
